Isoflex Protein Bar Review
In my honest opinion there are two types of protein bars, the ones that are dense, hard as a rock, and are purely for function and give you no pleasure when eating them. On the other side of the spectrum, there are the protein bars which try to give you the functionality of a supplement with the taste of a candy bar. AllMax Nutrition Isoflex Triple Layer bars fall into the latter category. Isoflex Triple layer bars have a cookie layer on the bottom, then a layer of either marshmallow or caramel, and then they are completely surrounded by a layer of chocolate. Of course, somewhere hidden in these layers is an impressive 30g of protein.
The flavor I tried was chocolate caramel crunch, and it was good. It's a very sweet bar, and that is because it does have a lot of sugar alcohol, despite having only 1 g of sugar it has 21g of sugar alcohol. Unlike sugar, sugar alcohols don't cause tooth decay and also give a kind of cooling sensation when you consume it. Sugar alcohols due contain calories though, they have about 2.6 calories compared to sugars 4 calories, so unlike artificial sweeteners sugar alcohols do have a caloric value. The cookie is soft and a bit crunchy, but it's not as hard as the cookie in say a Twix bar. I don't think anyone will have a problem with the flavor of these bars.
Now let's get into the guts of this bar. As stated earlier, this 85g bar contains 30g of protein composed of their protein complex of whey protein isolate, hydrolyzed gelatin, calcium caseinate, soy protein crisps (soy protein isolate, calcium carbonate, whey protein concentrate, dry roasted peanuts. This is what they have listed in their complex, so I am assuming that each of those contribute to the 30g of protein which are contained in the bar. One of the biggest problems with protein bars is that they always seem to have a high fat percentage. These bars do have 12g of fat, and 6g is saturated but also contain both omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids as well. This is due to the oils they have to use to keep the chocolate and other ingredients stable at room temperature so they don't end up being a melted pile of goop in your gym bag or whatever. Another thing that they have done to stop that process is they have an advanced cold-flow chilling process that prevents protein degradation and post-production melting, that's pretty "cool".
The benefits of this bar is that it provides a treat that doesn't have much impact on your weight because they use a blend of sugars that does not have much impact on your blood sugar and insulin levels, the same sugars that are used for diabetics. However, if you are really trying to lean out there are still 300 calories to consider that are in this bar. That being said, it might not directly help you with your diet by replacing meals or using them as a substitute for protein powders or meals, but they can definitely supplement your diet when you're craving something sweet or have to choose between fast food and snacks. With 30g of protein, a combination of omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids, great taste and texture, and only 1 g of sugar; the Isoflex Triple Layer bar is definitely worthy of being on the list of must try bars.
