Muscletime #4 DVD
2005 Charlotte Pro
Backstage at the Charlotte Pro a lot of the competitors were shown pumping up. Dennis James was looking incredibly full and huge. It makes me wonder what these guys would look like as naturals since we see their training DVDs and it's almost as though we're supposed to believe that we could ever look like that if we followed their routines - which would be impossible first of all since most of us don't have the time for marathon workouts, and secondly, most of us are also not on the mass quantities of steroids and other chemicals these guys are on which allow them to have such intense workouts to begin with. I do wonder what they would look like if they had to build muscle on their own. A bit off topic, but it is a question that has been on my mind lately.
Quincy Taylor was shown pumping up next with standing alternate dumbbell curls. He has always impressed me mainly because he would probably be the most imposing human being alive. Bear in mind this guy is 6'4 and huge as anybody. He has both size and height which would make him look as freaky as can be. Could you imagine seeing a bouncer that was that huge? It would definitely be a sight to see.
Branch Warren was backstage doing barbell curls. He was looking freaky and full and won the whole show at a height of 5'6 - almost a foot shorter than Quincy, but he still beat him.
The competitors then did the following mandatory poses:
- Front Double Biceps
- Front Lat Spread
- Side Chest
- Back Double Biceps
- Lat Spread
- Side Triceps
- Abdominals and Thigh
- Most Muscular
Dennis was huge as can be and very shredded. This was an excellent showing for him.
Mustafa was looking very well and is known for his amazing chest. Yet surprisingly he didn't appear to be in Dennis' league when it came to chest and that was a surprise. Dennis was looking huge and particularly full at this contest though.
Fakhri is a pro who I had not heard too much of before seeing him at this show. He was very shredded and had good proportion as well.
I was always impressed with Craig. In the Battle for the Olympia 2004 DVD he said he spends $200 a week on food which doesn't seem like too much so I think I will try to shoot for the same budget. It's amazing that some pros don't eat or train any differently than I do. That is where genetics and steroids make a big difference. Both are hugely important factors that are seldom mentioned in the pages of FLEX magazine. Craig looked awesome as always.
Branch looked good, but is possibly just a little too thickly muscled. At 5'6 he is packed with mass from head to toe. The muscle is just popping off his frame. This thighs were very cut and huge the crowd loved them.
Charlotte Pro Comparisons
The competitors were up to compare with each other and they were all very impressive. This was a great lineup, possibly in part due to the fact that there was a lot of prize money to fight for. The pros went through the mandatory quarter turns and were looking very sharp. The pros next went through the mandatory poses and it was interesting to see the 6'4 Quincy stand next to the 5'6 Branch.
2005 Charlotte Pro
Dennis James posed to some powerful Operatic music and was looking very well. He had nailed his conditioning and was also very full. He then posed to Freestyler by Bomfunk MC.
Mustafa was in good condition for the show. That is curious in that Milos Sarcev said that he hates doing cardio. Since he had two scares with Aldactone (a diuretic), I would imagine he does his fair share of cutting drugs before a show (merely an educated guess of course).
Fakhri posed to "Dance With My Father" by Luther Vandross. He picked up the pace of his posing music next by posing to some hip hop. The crowd seemed to enjoy his routine and he seemed to enjoy being on stage.
Craid had a respetable showing. He was big and in condition and definitely world class. It will be good to see him at the Olympia again, and no doubt he will qualify for that.
Armin was another big but lesser known pro in the pro circuit. I think the reason for this would relate to the necessary costs required to travel the world to compete.
Branch posed to the Terminator music and the crowd was impressed. Branch was very big and shredded. He then posed to "Rolling"
Posedown & Awards.
The posedown took place and pros did the mandatory quarter turns and poses.
The top five were presented their awards:
5 - Quincy Taylor
4- Mustafa Mohammad
3 - George Farah
2 - Dennis James
1 - Branch Warren
Lonnie Teper kind of screwed up when he said the award for second place would be presented by Dennis - oops, Derek. This was obviously a slip up because he had in mind the second place contestant and confused that with the name of the presenter. Branch was awarded first place and hit some poses with his medal on.
Quincy Taylor @ 305 pounds
Quincy chatted a bit with Wolfgang from MuscleTime and then hit some poses and was looking huge at 6'4 and 305 pounds. Quincy said that at 16 he was able to bench press 425.
One day after the Olympia at the gym.
Quincy started off with flat bench presses doing 135 pounds for a warmup set and then going into 225 pounds which he did for 11 easy reps. He hit some poses for the camera after his set was complete and was looking huge. Quincy said that he could get hurt being too damn lean doing something he had no business doing. In this case, it was the flat bench press with 225 for reps. He didn't want to do too many reps out of fear of injury which is a legitimate concern. He took off his tank top next and hit some poses and was looking very sharp.
Quincy went on to perform bench presses on the incline next. He hit some poses after using 135 and then went on to do 225. Quincy hit some poses and "The Middle" by Jimmy Eats World was on the radio. Some other songs were also on. Quincy then did some cable crossovers.
Quincy trained arms next and was performing lying extensions with the cambered curl bar. Quincy would hit some poses in between his sets and was looking sharp. Quincy continued to work his triceps and was looking excellent. He was doing triceps pushdowns without a shirt on and was huge and shredded and very imposing at 6'4!
Quincy hit some free poses and was looking excellent once again. As long as he continues to make improvements he will continue to place well at bodybuilding shows. He is huge and it is very rare to find a bodybuilder at his height who has achieved what he has. His delts were ridiculously big. His most muscular poses were excellent.
Quincy Taylor at the Charlotte Pro
Quincy went through the mandatory poses and was looking as impressive as ever. He was large and shapely and in excellent condition. I would like to see him in person sometime, as he is probably all the more impressive. Quincy posed to "Just A Lil' Bit" by 50 CENT for his individual routine.
George Farah in the Gym - October 2002 in Las Vegas
This footage of George Farah was taken at the same time the 2002 Battle for the Olympia was. You could even see Mitsuru Okabe in the footage. George was in good conditioning and was training back. He did some pulldowns as his first exercises (using the short bar and then the long bar behind the neck). He then did standing alternate dumbbell curls and then some straight bar curls. George was looking very cut during this workout.
George hit some poses and while he is not the biggest bodybuilder around, he is in great shape.
George Farah at the 2005 Charlotte Pro
George posed to "White Wedding" by Billy Idol. His posing music changed and he eventually did sort of a robot routine. George does not have enough stature to be a freak but he was looking very well.
Gary Strydom FIBO 1991
Gary came out to pose and the song "Lay Your Hands On Me" by Bon Jovi was on. Gary posed and he was looking incredible. This was without question the most impressive section of this DVD. He was looking sick. He was full and round and in great condition. His muscles were shapely and he was shredded everywhere. "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns N' Roses was on next.
A lot of pros were in this portion of the DVD - Victor Richards, Dorian Yates, Gunter Schlierkamp, Paul Dillett, Chris Cormier, Kevin Levrone, Aaron Baker, Porter Cottrell, and Patrick Nicholls. All the pros were looking sharp and were just plain huge. This was also a very impressive sequence, although I was still most impressed with the Gary Strydom sequence. It was interesting to note the heights of the bodybuilders during this sequence: Victor and Dorian were matched at 5'10 as were Gunter and Paul at 6'1.
Tommi Thorvildsen, Gold's Venice, CA - Feb, 2002
Tommi was in the gym training during this sequence and was lifting very heavy during his back workout, going up to 495 for barbell rows with good form. Talk about strong. It's funny because Tommi doesn't really show any of the trademarks of being strong - his muscles aren't the biggest around, or the densest for that matter. It is sort of strange. As Shawn Ray said, Tommi is known for his shredded glutes but not known for his genetic superiority. In any case, he is world class, but will never be Mr. Olympia. Tommi went on to do cable rows with the full stack, and plate loaded rows with four 45s and a 35 on each side before hitting his poses. He was looking sharp, but lacked muscle density and size. This was strange given his strenght levels and his alledged body weight of 270.
Lee Priest - One Day Out of the 2002 Arnold Classic
Lee was looking great as usual. He was full and hard, but had the usual flaws - notably his chest which was dwarfed by his cartoon sized arms and his back which was not up to the same standard as the rest of him as well. Lee was looking very well and went on to place fourth at the 2002 Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic. As noted by Wolfgang from MuscleTime, his legs were very cut up.
This was an excellent DVD and well worth the money. The quality of film was excellent as well. In some of the muscletime DVDs I had noted that they seemed to be pixelated, but that was not the case here. My favourite sequence was definitely the part featuring Gary Strydom - he was damn impressive and really sold this DVD for me.
