Omar Deckard

Filmed on Location at
Larry North Total Fitness
Dallas, TX

The DVD started off with a very kickass intro which was unlike anything I had ever seen in any bodybuilding DVD before as it was on par with actual motion pictures you would expect to see at the cinema. Omar Deckard was the first bodybuilder shown. He spoke about his beginnings in bodybuilding and how he was motivated to compete by seeing Pumping Iron with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno. From what I could see, Omar appeared to be fairly tall but with pro potential as far as the taller bodybuilders are concerned. Omar hit some poses and was looking awesome. He had good size, and was in good condition. Naturally a bodybuilder of his height would need to put on even more size given his stature, but it was obvious he was on the right path and with continued improvements he could eventually turn pro. Omar said that he would try to stay in shape during the offseason and that he was trying to build his body as symmetrically as possible and develop muscle maturity. Some training footage of Omar was shown and his arms were looking amazing, even more shredded than the rest of him. Omar hit some poses and looked to be pretty close to contest shape at the time of the footage. Omar hit some flyes for his pecs next further demonstrating his incredible shape while the DVD displayed the exceptional quality of production. You could tell that either a lot of time was put into this production, or the producers are very experienced, or both (likely this one). Omar displayed a very good structure for bodybuilding and coupled with his stature, you could see the potential he had for the pro ranks. As I said, the main issue with Omar would be putting on enough size to make a dent as a pro.

Omar explained that he was on a double split routine and explained his training in a little more detail. Omar also explained his nutrition in detail and said that he includes some cheat days in his nutritional program. Omar said that the day after a cheat day he would be upwards of seven or eight pounds heavier. This was very interesting to me, since it is incredible how quickly such nutritional changes can change a physique. Omar said he worked part time as security at certain night clubs and worked full time at his father's restaurant in the intercity, where he had been working for the past 15 years. He said it was a fast food restaurant and he found it difficult working there during a diet when senses are heightened and he would smell all the fast food. I found it interesting when Omar said that eating junk food ages the body faster because it is something I was aware of and it is interesting to hear other bodybuilders point that out. An aged body is not desirable for a bodybuilder.

Layne Norton

Filmed on Location at
Carla's Fitness Club
Tampa, FL

Layne Norton's segment was up next and he looked great for a natural pro bodybuilder. Layne said that he started weight training due to a lack of self confidence as he felt he was a prototypical nerd. Layne said he was very competitive and then wanted to compete. He started lifting at 15 years old and 125 pounds. Layne said his offseason weight was 220 pounds and contest weight was 190 pounds (Layne's height is 5'10 and 1/2). Layne continued to discuss bodybuilding as he hit some poses. His best poses in my opinion are the back double biceps and most muscular pose. Layne said his goal was to win the WNBF pro card, which was a tested natural division. If not, he said he would be happy winning in another professional natural division. He later went on to achieve this goal! Layne said he was a science geek and liked learning about nutrition and helping others with theirs. Layne continued to discuss bodybuilding, explaining that his offseason and precontest training was mostly the same for him since he felt whatever builds muscle will also help to maintain it.

Layne spoke about periodization training and some footage of him hitting poses was shown as he did so. He had some great arms, and said his legs were improving, as he put an inch and half on his legs over the past year. Layne said that at 180 pounds as a senior in high school he was bench pressing 300 pounds (sounds like me!). He said that for 12 weeks of just using dumbbells, he put on more size in his chest than he had in the previous three years. Layne explained why he felt this was, and some footage was shown of him on contest day looking very shredded! Even as a natural, he was as shredded as lots of NPC Junior Nationals and Nationals competitors loaded up to the gills on clen, T3, and all other kinds of cutting drugs. Layne said that over one gram of protein per pound of body weight was not proven to be any beneficial to sticking to just one. Layne said he ate slightly more than that because he liked to include meat in his diet. Layne said that most supplements on the whole were mostly ineffective. He said that multi-vitamins, protein powders, and creatine are all good supplements. He said that glutamine and chondroitin for his joints, and he also recommended a good antioxidant for anybody. Layne went on to thank his sponsors including www.bodybuilding.com. Some contest footage of Layne was shown and he was looking awesome. Layne explained that a serious injury held him back but he went back to his previous best and even beyond it. Layne's segment ended with some training and posing footage of him shown.

Grigori Atoyan

Filmed on Location at
Gold's Gym
Las Vegas, NV

Grigori Atoyan was up next. He started off his segment by explaining how he started getting involved in training. Grigori said that he started off at around 150 pounds and gets all the way up to 250 pounds in the offseason and competes at 220. Some training footage of Grigori was shown and he was full and cut and had a great pump. He said his first contest was in 1996. He said he won the overall weighing in at only 159 pounds. Grigori said he owned a Max Muscle store and that sometimes some kids would come in and he would recommend a supplement to them but explained that they didn't have to take everything and to take bodybuilding step by step. Grigori hit some poses and was in amazing shape, seemingly contest ready or very close to it. Grigori explained that in the offseason his nutrition wasn't good and that he did it fast food at that time. He flexed his legs in the footage which were cut and had good size. His calves were big, but slightly high and his quads had some deeply etched grooves. Some posing and training footage of Grigori was shown and his arms looked very balanced in the front double biceps pose. After that, some footage of Grigori posing in his posing trunks was shown.

Ivan Nikolov

Filmed on Location at
Calta's Fitness Club
Tampa, FL

Ivan Nikolov's segment was up next. He talked a lot about bodybuilding while some posing footage of him was shown. Ivan was from Bulgaria and to be honest, I hadn't really heard of any bodybuilders from that country so it was really interesting to see one. Ivan was in pretty good shape although he appeared to be holding a film of water. He was still pretty shredded for 5'7 and had decent size, although not quite the pro potential as Omar or Grigori. He had a decent structure though, so with time I imagine he could get there. Ivan said that he first competed at the National Championships in Bulgaria. Ivan explained his offseason and precontest training and some more posing footage was shown. When he hit his back double biceps, the condition of his delts was very impressive. Ivan said he takes whey protein, cassein protein, creatine, and a vitamin and mineral formula. Ivan seemed somewhat "ordinary" looking when he would stand relaxed, but when he hit poses, his body would blow up and he looked much bigger. Ivan was shown pumping up in the pump room before his contest. When I saw footage of him posing I felt he looked much better than the previous footage shown. He was in incredible condition, was hard and dry, and was showing an amazing shape and structure. His muscularity really came to life when he hit certain poses, and while he still had room to put on more size, he was definitely looking large. He said he placed third in a contest in a very strong class, then won the 2004 NPC Tampa Bay Classic the next week.

Patrick Richardson

Filmed on Location at
Larry North Total Fitness
Dallas, TX

Patrick Richardson's segment was shown next. It showed some pictures of his transformation from 1996 to present day and it was quite amazing. He was cited online as being 5'4 in height when I researched it, but I would not be able to tell that by seeing footage of him alone which is the sign of a well proportioned physique. Some posing and training footage of Patrick was shown, some of which was in black and white which gave the footage an interesting feel to it. Patrick won the 2004 NPC Junior Nationals and also entered the NPC Nationals that year. Some of the pump room footage was shown and Patrick looked like he hit his peak for the show, although maybe he could have stood to be slightly sharper in some areas. However, some footage was shown of Patrick on stage and under lights and he looked sharper than he did when he was pumping up. Patrick definitely looked to have potential as one of the shorter bodybuilders in the amateur scene. Patrick said that he peaked at 208-210 in the offseason and competed in the 150s. Patrick said that in the offseason he trained with heavier weight and lower reps and that this was very different from his precontest training. Patrick said that with calves, you either have them or you don't, and I happen to agree with this based on observations of other bodybuilders throughout history. Patrick said that he always looked up to Lee Priest since he was about the same height as him at 5'4 or 5'5 and he was capable of putting on so much mass.\
